Previous Entry installing iPod compatible sound sytem in 9-3? Feb. 4th, 2008 @ 10:27 am Next Entry
Hi all--

I would like to install a stereo in my 2003 9-3 convertible with a auxilliary output jack so I can play my iPod.

I did some research and found a website with instructions on how to do this with my current sound system, but I'm not inclined to hack into my expensive and beautiful car without knowing what I'm doing!

Anybody have any recommendations for post-market sound systems? How do they work with my existing SID? And how much should I expect to pay for something nice, but not too fancy?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the convertible, but I have an 03 9-3t and it has a spot in the middle console for an aux jack. I bought the aux jack from elkparts online and didn't even have to take apart the dash to plug it in to the factory stereo. I just reached around the back of the radio from the passenger side floor and felt around until I figured out where it goes. Then you can just run the wires into the console and it snaps right into the pre-made outlet. You can get to aux mode thru the source button on the steering wheel controls. (I had to take my car to the dealer for them to update the computer to recognize the aux jack, though.)

It requires a male-to-male audio cable to go from the jack in the console to your ipod that you can pick up just about anywhere. You have to use your ipod controls, so its nothing fancy but a lot less work then switching out the head unit.

That's two different cars, guys. 0nefivetwo's 2003 2.0t is a new style sedan, which has an aux in option. Your 2003 convertible is the old body style with no real options for a proper aux input, short of hacking the stereo or waiting until the Trollpod guys come back to life.

That said, hacking a stereo is not so hard if you're handy with a soldering iron. I've done a few, no one ever complained so far ;]

You are so right. You have placed me on the pedestal of saab shame. I am such a dumbo... thanks for making me realize what an idiot I am nearly 2 years later. You are a far superior and knowledgeable LJ commenter, that's for sure! (seriously, this was hilarious.)

Why not just get an FM transmitter or some other light-weight option?

tried that--doesn't work in my existing stereo because the FM receiver automatically scans to pick up signals and I can't override it to find a blank channel, which you need in order to use the transmitter :(

I may be able to help there. My wife's '96 900 probably has a similar stereo... hold both tune up and down, and that turns off the scanning.
